Psychedelic soul cabaret crooner Johnny Showcase is pleased to announce
his return to Underground Arts, 12th and Callowhill, on Saturday, July 28th at 9pm. (tickets!)
The July 28th show will coincide with the digital release of his four song EP MYSTIC TICKET I: The Pump Fake.
On the 28th, we will play the EP in its entirety, front to back!
A follow up to his 2011 soul/ comedy masterpiece LOVE IS THE MESSAGE, Johnny turns in his 8-track 70’s sound for a futuristic fantasia, putting the analog aside for an almost completely digital synthetic-sound.
Each track nibbles on a different genre of spacey funk, from the Herbie Hancock kinetic shuffle of Screwdriver (I’m Sorry Michael) to the Prince / D’Angelo- drenched ballad Rubber Glove, finishing with the anthemic Bowie-flavored disco of Forget about the World. Also included is a dub-heavy reworking of Johnny’s stalker love song, Shalamon (Future Mix).
I began work on MYSTIC TICKET after a terrible bicycle accident left me with a fractured elbow. Jobless and stranded at home, I spent the winter of 2010-2011 with Dotty on my lap, self-producing the record, enlisting friends such as Rumi Kitchen, guitarist Vinnie Federici and bassist Andrew Nelson to help create this futuristic deliciousness. It was mixed/ mastered at Waterfront Studios by blood sister/ collaborator Rachel Alina, who co-produced Love is the Message with us and Henry Hirsch (Lenny Kravitz, Madonna).
Starting July 28th, Screwdriver (I’m Sorry Michael) will be available for a free download in exchange for following Johnny on Twitter and liking Johnny Showcase and the Lefty Lucy Cabaret on Facebook.
